A Honu Wedding

My wonderful friend married the love of her life a few weeks ago. To honor the occasion, I made her and her husband a paper cut of sea turtles. This was such a fun piece to work on. I think I need to make some more turtles in the near future :) Congrats again, Drew and Andrea!!!

Moorish Idol

Here are some Moorish Idols i have been experimenting with. I cut a large version, and then scaled them down and made them into a card for a dear friend. I think i will be using these guys again in a papercut soon.

Spiny Lumpsucker

It's a rainy morning here on the island. A perfect time to design new cuts!

Here's a papercut I made a few weeks ago for a friend. His favorite fish happens to be the Spiny Lumpsucker.

Emperor Angelfish

It's the weekend!!

I've been on a fish kick recently and have come up with a ton of fun fish designs. I've also started experimenting with adding more layers and color. It's so much fun to sort through all my paper to find the perfect combinations!

Did you know that juvenile Emperor Angelfish are dark blue with electric blue and white rings, while adults have yellow and blue stripes? It takes about 24 to 30 months for an Emperor Angelfish to acquire its adult coloring. (Thanks, Wikipedia!)

Cunning As A Fox

Another tribal design! This one represents a warrior whose symbol is the fox. Foxes are tricky and clever, traits every good warrior should possess.

A Snake + A Deer = A Sneer!

So, today's post features a tribal art inspired piece I just finished cutting. For this papercut, I combined elements from Maori, Polynesian, and Native American design. I chose a deer and snakes...for no real reason. They were  just the first animals to come to mind :)

While I am still making a ton of Polynesian/Tahitian inspired designs (I will post some soon!), I took a break and decided to play with framing simple black and white scenes. Possible postcards? Stationary? Or maybe the beginning ideas for a new collaboration...

My Resolution

Happy (belated) New Years, everyone!

I have been jumping around from one place to another recently, and haven't had much time to focus on my art.  I did manage to buy some nice new paper in NYC though. My resolution for this year is to get back on track with my paper cutting, get into some shows, set up my online store, and get my website up and running. Oh, and sell some art, of course!

I had a little time recently to design a card. I am in love with this color combination! I leave tomorrow, so when I get back later in the month from Guatemala (!!), I am planing on cutting a few more of these babies out. Show me some love, and maybe you will find one in your mailbox :)

P.S. I am always looking for inspiration. If you have any ideas, pass 'em on!

From Paper Cut to...Quilt?!

I am the most fortunate person in the world because I have an amazing aunt who can quilt anything! She sent me the best surprise a while ago (and by 'a while ago' I mean more than a year).

First let me preface this by saying that I am a descendent of beekeepers, so honey bees represent something very special to my family.

My aunt took this papercut I made, used it as a pattern, and made me THIS AMAZING QUILTED PILLOW COVER!!

The photo quality is not the best...that's what you get when you use an old cell phone! And yes, my dad has a HUGE record/cd collection.

I have already said it many times, but thank you so much, Aunt Sunny! This is truly a gift I will cherish forever. And by the way, I am still hoping that one day I get that quilting lesson we have been talking about :)

The 'New' New Paddle

Aloha everyone!

I got a new paddle a while ago. The only problem: almost everyone in my club got the exact same one.

I knew that I needed to do something to my paddle to make it easier to spot and identify. But what? My sister helped me come up with a brilliant idea: make a sticker.

I bought some permanent waterproof vinyl and transfer tape, and I was ready to go. 

I knew I wanted a design with a Polynesian-vibe. Something that had to do with paddling or the island. I began sketching ideas and found that I kept coming back to two elements: the sun and taro leaves. My design represents both.

After I had my design, I cut it out of vinyl.

This was my first time using vinyl!

A little transfer tape, some delicate placement, and a lot of rubbing later... I have a 'new' new paddle!

Biological Specimens

Aloha, all!

So I have this really fun iridescent paper I have been wanting to use. I decided to test it out on some butterflies and I think it worked really well! I put them in a shadow box frame and now I have the beginnings of my very own bug collection. I have to say, I'm MUCH happier having a paper bug collection rather than a real one, that's for sure!
